childhood soundtrack

Think back to your childhood . . . is there any music that comes to mind that you associate with some of the best times of your life? There certainly is for me, and thanks to my cousin I can now listen to it anytime I like.

Yes, I'm talking about Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brother Band Greatest Hits. It's okay to laugh, I think it is funny too because honestly even though I like country, Larry is just a little too country. But there something about the memory of my cousin and aunt on a road trip singing along. So many years later the three of us can still sing all the songs, even without the music.

Some days it feels so comforting to hear familiar songs, no matter how corny. We even have a family song, which is, quite honestly, perhaps not the most appropriate song for little kids to sing, but we all know it and learned it at a very young age. And now, I share it with you:

The Pinched Up Man
I knew a little pinched up man
His name was Simon Slick
He had a mule with dreamy eyes
And oh how she could kick.
She could kick as quick as lightening
And she had an iron jaw,
Just the think to have around
To entertain your mother-in-law.
Her skin was gutta-percha
And her hoof was made of lead,
She'd kick you like a feather
And stand you on your head.
She hit a steam boat with her head
And knocked it out of site.
She kicked the boarding house into
At twelve o'clock at night.
The boarders, in their shirt socks,
They stood and held their breath
While she ran her hind legs down her throat
And kicked herself to death.
