Poetry Joy

I don't know many people that squeal with joy when the the announcement of a new poet laureate is made. I, however, was one of those people yesterday. And I freely admit that I "squealed with joy" when I heard that Philip Levine would be the U.S. Poet Laureate.

I have long admired Mr. Levine's work for its deceptive simplicity, focus on social and political justice, and accurate portrayal of the American working class. His poems are accessible to even the newest reader of poetry. And, most important, his poems reflect an America that is often forgotten or swept away. I look forward to Mr. Levine's tenure.
