Fourth of July Weekend -- The Recap

July Fourth began with a bang, although not quite the bang that you like to hear on this particular day. Rather, Big J awoke when he heard a loud thud, followed by little j calling for both of us. We went into her room to find her sitting on her bed, sobbing, with blood down her head, neck and front. It is pretty disconcerting when you find your 5 year old covered with blood at 5:15 a.m.

It turns out that little j fell out of bed and hit her head on what we can't be sure (she contends it was a tissue box). After getting her calmed down enough to look at the wound Big J deemed it serious enough to go to the ER. I was a tad skeptical, because at this point it had stopped bleeding, but decided that at the very least it would be good to have someone look at it and help clean it up.

As it turned out, Big J called it right because little j left the ER about two hours later with two staples in her head. She was a trooper. She didn't even flinch when they put the staples in. Wow!

So, we began the day earlier than expected.

Later that day little j lost one of her top front teeth. We'd been waiting for about a month for it to fall out. The other top front tooth isn't far behind.

We celebrated the holiday in our traditional way -- with barbecue and our friends the Lost NYers. We short off a few fireworks, but it started to rain and we were all wiped out, so we went in the house. little j practically fell into bed, and Big J and I weren't far behind.

Of course in our exhaustion the tooth fairy didn't make it that night -- clearly we are now out of the running for parents of the year between the staples and forgotten tooth.

Fortunately, in addition to fireworks which lasted far into the night, there was a major thunderstorm. Clearly, we explained to little j, the tooth fairy could not make it to our house. And of course she would make up for it with something extra special the next night.

And she did -- a dollar plus a Polly Pocket-sized Ariel that is able to change from mermaid to princess. little j could not have been happier.
