little j's new favorite condiment, if it can be called that, is cinnamon. She likes it on almost everything -- there usual suspects such as toast and pancakes, and then there are the kind of bizarre such as rice (with dinner) and scrambled eggs.
Apparently little j is intuitively tuned in to the nutritional benefits of cinnamon:
- A teaspoon of cinnamon contains 8 mg of calcium, almost one mg of iron, over a gram of fiber, and vitamins C, K, and manganese. It also contains about half a gram of “usable” (non-fiber) carbohydrate.
- Cinnamon has traditionally been used to treat digestive ailments such as indigestion, gas and bloating, stomach upset, and diarrhea.
- An early study has shown that individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes have improved insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control by taking as little as 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day.
