Under the Knife

I'm going under the knife tomorrow...okay, not really. It's more like under the needle. I got a fascinating education about the make-up of a liver today, and I resisted the urge to comment on how yummy it is with fava beans and a nice bottle of Chianti.

But in all seriousness, I am having a hepatic cyst aspirated. It's actually not that bad, and the nurses likened it to having a liver biopsy. But I must admit I am a little nervous. I cannot understand why I have an aversion to hospitals -- hospitals and medical procedures for others = fine. Hospitals and medical procedures for me = not fine.

I don't know where this comes from. Big J has been in the hospital several times and he seems just fine. Millions of people go into the hospital for procedures and come home just fine. Somehow, I have convinced myself that I will not be "just fine." It's irrational, I know.

In any case...after the procedure they need to monitor me for for a couple hours for signs of anaphylaxis and bleeding and then I can go home. And I have been instructed to stay off my feet and take it easy for the remainder of the day. No problem! Can we make it the whole weekend?

I am not a doctor, but I play one on tv. I advise you to be off your feet for the whole entire weekend.

As a true medical professional. You should stay off your feet for the entire weekend. I would also suggest no lifting and plenty of clear fluids, sans alcoholic beverages. As you know the liver is highly vascualar and needs time to heal. But, it does just that it heals itself when it can. That's the beauty of the liver. Call me if you have questions after the procedure and you feel like you can't call back the nurses from the hospital. All my healing thoughts are will you.
