Thanksgiving and (more) apples

Big J and I are headed to the store this morning to do our Thanksgiving shopping. LostNYers are providing turkey, stuffing, homemade rolls (yum!), and apple pie. We are bringing cranberry sauce with port and dried figs (my go-to), roasted root vegetables, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts (of course), and honey ginger pumpkin pie. little j and I are going to make the cranberry sauce and pie today and I think we will also make an apple pie for home, considering that I have about 20 pounds of apples to use up.

The apple butter turned out so good! It is tart and spicy and perfect with toast or cheddar cheese. Big J suggested making turnovers with sharp cheddar and the apple butter...sounds so good. I might make one more batch. My other idea is to can some apple pie filling, and I have found a couple recipes, but haven't decided exactly how I want to do it, so I am still thinking about that one.

I find it a little ironic that our family dinners have basically come down to whatever we can find in the kitchen -- last night little j had mac and cheese, Big J had scrambled eggs in a tortilla, and I had oatmeal. Good thing we're going to the store today!

Hmmm...I've never tried brussel sprouts. What's the best way to prepare them?
