done and done

I have reached a critical milestone: dissertation proposal done! Well, it's printing out and I am taking copies up to Grounds this afternoon. But I'm done writing, revising, and generally researching, at least for the next couple of weeks. And a week from Wednesday I will be one more step closer to the Ph.D.

Today feels like a really big deal, except that I thought it would happen on Friday. It is sort of like running a marathon and knowing you are close to the finish line and will be the first to cross, then about 3 yards from the end someone tells you that you have to run one more mile. When you finally finish it's in the middle of the pack. So, you don't win, but you don't come in last. You're just glad you're done.

Sadly, Big J is out of town this week, so there will be no celebratory martini. I will save that for next Wednesday after the defense. But maybe little j and I will go for ice cream tonight.
